It is now just over a year since I moved from the UK to Spain, and one of the things I have been particularly pleased about is being able to continue teaching some of my UK pupils online.

Using Zoom, we have been able to carry on with regular piano lessons despite being in different countries, and the experience has worked so well that I am now happy to offer a limited number of online lessons to new pupils.

Who are the lessons for?

My online lessons are aimed at pianists who already have some experience of playing the piano and would like to continue developing their skills.

They may particularly suit:

  • pupils who have previously had lessons but no longer have a regular teacher;
  • pianists working towards ABRSM or other graded examinations;
  • adults returning to the piano after a break;
  • more experienced players who would like help with technique, interpretation or new repertoire; or
  • anyone who simply enjoys playing and would benefit from regular guidance and encouragement.

Online tuition is not something I currently recommend for absolute beginners. When somebody is first learning the piano, there are many aspects of posture, hand position and basic technique that I prefer to teach in person.

For a pianist who already has those foundations, however, Zoom lessons can work extremely well.

How do online piano lessons work?

Lessons take place using Zoom. All you need is your piano or digital piano, a suitable device such as a phone, tablet or laptop, and a good internet connection.

During a lesson I can listen to your playing, work with you on technique and interpretation, discuss fingering and practise particular passages, just as we would during a face-to-face lesson.

My existing online pupils have shown me that distance certainly doesn’t have to mean giving up regular piano tuition!

Whether your aim is to work towards your next exam, tackle more challenging repertoire, return to playing after some time away, or simply become a better and more confident pianist, lessons can be tailored to what you would like to achieve.
