The following list of books are superb resources for pupils who have been studying piano for over a year who are serious about improving their technique.
Don’t be put off by the Spanish name of the Loeschhorn books as they are both excellent resources for musicians.
The Loeschhorn books are not always in stock on Amazon so I have listed an eBay seller towards the bottom of the page that is selling the revised edition of Children’s Studies which contains all 40 pieces. I have bought from this seller in the past with no problems.

- Piano Time Carols
There's nothing quite like gathering around the piano at Christmas time to sing and play through the favourite carols, though amidst all the Christmas hurly-burly there's never much time to practise them. Realising this, Pauline Hall has produced Piano Time Carols - 19 really easy arrangements of the best-loved carols starting at around the level of Piano Time 1. They have been carefully simplified so that, instead of learning just one or two carols, you will find that you can play a wide selection, to the delight of your friends and family!
The left-hand part is, with a single exception, in one position, and there are optional accompaniments to a number of carols for your teacher or a friend to play.
Children’s Studies op. 181 Loeschhorn, Carl Albert
Available from eBay for approx. £15.50
Carl Albert Löschhorn (1819–1905) was one of the most sought-after piano teachers in the Berlin area. His Children’s Studies Op. 181 was originally published in two volumes with 20 studies each. The new edition in the Essential Exercises series contains them in one volume. The studies are composed for beginners already mastering the basics who shall practice and overcome more difficult technical challenges. Notwithstanding the title, the pieces are in no way childish and can therefore be used by students of every age. In each study, Löschhorn uses a technical exercise in the musical context which he varies in many different ways, combines in an imaginative manner, shapes into a manageable form, thus creating wonderful musical miniatures. What makes the collection all the more valuable is the fact that both hands are trained equally. With the Children’s Studies, the pianist learns to practice major basic forms of playing. Once started, the ‘module’ to be practised is like a perpetuum mobile, causing continuous movement until the end of the respective study. The entire tonal range is explored, and little surprises require the player’s concentration. Technique and music are combined in an impressive manner.
