Today I had the great pleasure of presenting an ABRSM Grade 4 Distinction certificate to my pupil Lawrie.

Following up on his two previous Distinction performances at grade 1 and 2, he chose to skip grade 3 and prepared very well.

Lawrie played a wonderful programme consisting of Benda: Sonatina in A minor, Elgar: Chanson de matin, Op. 15 No. 2, arr. Blackwell, Richard Michael: A Kwela for Caitlin and finishing with Anton Diabelli: Moderato Cantabile.

The examiners notes were a pleasure to read: Benda: Sonatina in A minor “this was assured playing technically and there was a vivid sense of characterisation.”, Elgar: Chanson de matin, Op. 15 No. 2, arr. Blackwell “The melodic line was skilfully conveyed and the legato touch suited the style… the expressive details were imaginatively conveyed in this musical account.”, Richard Michael: A Kwela for Caitlin “The tempo was buoyant and you captured the mood of the piece from the outset.”, Anton Diabelli: Moderato Cantabile “musical instincts were clear and there was a mature feeling for the character throughout.”

Summing up the performance “The individual characters and moods were differentiated skilfully and the detail was well thought through across the programme.”

I would like to thank Lawrie for his hard work as we finalised the preparation in the lead-up to the exam and also his parents for having confidence in me to teach him.
