Elevating Your Piano Recordings with Zoom Mobile Microphones
Back in November 2024, I shared how using the Zoom Q8n-4K camera transformed the way I capture piano performances. Today, I’d like to follow that up with another option that’s even more accessible — pairing your smartphone with a Zoom mobile microphone.
Whether you’re using an Android or an iOS device, Zoom offers dedicated microphones that can take your recordings far beyond the capabilities of your phone’s built-in mic.
For Android users, the Zoom AM7 MS Stereo Microphone connects directly via USB-C. It offers an adjustable mid-side (MS) stereo recording technique, allowing you to control the width of the stereo image after recording. This means you can tailor the atmosphere of your piano recordings — from an intimate sound to a wider, concert-hall feel — all with a simple adjustment.
For iOS users, there’s the Zoom iQ7 Professional Stereo Microphone, designed specifically for iPhones and iPads with a Lightning connector. Like the AM7, it uses mid-side recording to deliver a crisp, balanced stereo image, perfectly capturing the nuances of piano tone and touch.
Both microphones are compact, easy to use, and surprisingly powerful. They turn your phone into a serious audio recorder, ideal for students preparing for exams, teachers wanting to document lessons, or musicians sharing performances online.
What I especially appreciate is the flexibility. Sometimes you might not want to set up a full camera rig like the Q8n-4K. Having a Zoom microphone on your phone means you can capture beautiful sound quality on the go — whether it’s a casual practice session, a lesson recording, or a spur-of-the-moment performance you want to treasure.
If you’re already video recording with your phone, pairing it with one of these microphones gives you a significant upgrade in sound, without any complicated editing or syncing.
As with all recording setups, placement is key. A little experimentation with where you position your phone relative to your piano can make a huge difference to the end result. Try placing the microphone at different heights and distances to find the sweet spot where your piano sounds its best.
If you’re looking for an easy way to elevate your piano recordings without investing in a separate camera, the Zoom AM7 or iQ7 could be a perfect addition to your toolkit.
An important reminder: make sure you choose the correct microphone for your device. The Zoom AM7 is designed for Android phones with a USB-C connection, while the Zoom iQ7 is specifically made for iOS devices with a Lightning connector. They are not interchangeable, so it’s important to pick the one that matches your phone.
Here is an example I recorded with my Am7 that I uploaded to my Soundcloud.
